Chapter 00

Prologue

“At a campsite in Bavaria”

— ohmiau

Q.1What were you doing when you heard you had won the Gold Award?
I was spending the night at an acquaintance’s campsite in Bavaria after returning from a trip, so I could catch the train home the next day. When I read the email, I was sitting in a circle around a fire, listening to live music. I was very happy, but part of me thought it was an elaborate scam. I didn’t tell anyone.
Chapter 01

The Spark

“Creating stories is a very instinctive process.”

— ohmiau

Q.2What motivated you to start drawing manga?
Around the same time I started watching anime and reading manga, I also began taking drawing more seriously, so I soon felt the urge to create and draw my own stories. I started drawing manga at 16, and I don’t think I was thinking about anything other than creating something.

Q.3How did you improve your storytelling and drawing skills?
I improved by creating stories and drawing them. Drawing manga has to be one of the most effective ways to learn to draw. You come up with a story, get excited about it, and want to bring it to life. By the time you realize you’ll have to draw all sorts of things you don’t know how to draw, it’s already too late, and you have no choice but to learn. For me, creating stories is a very instinctive process. Whenever I come across a story I like, whether it’s a book, a manga, or a movie, I ask myself why. And whenever I come across one I don’t like, I ask myself why, too. I think that’s how you develop a sense of taste that you can apply to your own stories.

Q.4When you create manga, which genres do you like, and which do you think suit you best?
I really like slice of life for its strong focus on the characters and the small everyday moments, sometimes magical, that it can create. I am also interested in magic, fantasy, the supernatural, and the absurd, but I have not yet created works in those directions.
Q.5What is your favorite manga?
My favorite manga is *Goodnight Punpun. I’ve always been a big fan of stories that follow a character as they grow up. In Punpun in particular, I find the contrast between his childhood innocence and the person he becomes as an adult really interesting. Childhood in general is a subject that interests me a lot. The author captures Punpun’s transition to adulthood and his everyday life in an incredibly intimate and realistic way. All of this is accompanied by the most spectacular artwork I’ve ever seen, with such a rich atmosphere and so much attention to detail that you feel Punpun could be a real person out there somewhere.

I think the influence Goodnight Punpun has had on my art is immediately apparent, and it may have been this story that got me so interested in slice of life. It was also the work that broadened my view of manga as a means of expression and showed me what was possible.

Q.6Why did you choose manga rather than Western comics or webtoons?
I’ve experimented with all three. Although the webtoon format is easier, I find it more artistically limiting. It doesn’t give me the same sense of satisfaction as seeing a completed page, which can almost be viewed as a work of art in its own right. To me, manga and comics are the same; the only difference is the reading direction. I don’t prefer one over the other.

The Work
— ¡Se acerca una tormenta de verano!

“The story came to me through its final line.”

*ohmiau. (2026, June). ¡Se acerca una tormenta de verano! (Final Page)

Q.7Does the work reflect any personal experience?
No, it does not reflect any personal experience. The story came to me through its final line. I wanted to end with a line that looked back nostalgically. It is the most important page of the one-shot, so I wanted every detail to be perfect, and put the most effort into it.

Q.8There seems to be a big difference in how the protagonist and León view “this day.” León thinks they’ll see each other again, while the protagonist sees it as “the last summer they’ll spend together.” Why do they see it so differently?
León also senses that something is going to change, but he isn’t the protagonist, so we don’t know what he’s thinking.
Q.9What would you like to convey to readers through this work?
A nostalgic, sad feeling. The kind you get when you appreciate something in the moment because you know it will not last forever.

Chapter 03

The Turning Point

“The biggest draw of MANGA Plus Creators is undoubtedly the Monthly Awards.”

— ohmiau

Image for Q.10
Q.10Why did you decide to submit your work on MANGA Plus Creators?
I decided to submit my work on MANGA Plus Creators to enter the monthly competition. The biggest draw of MANGA Plus Creators is undoubtedly the Monthly Awards.

I was especially drawn to the prizes and networking opportunities. Winning a prize also felt more achievable than in other competitions. I thought:《If I make it to the top 10, I’m sure I’ll win something》, although I didn’t expect to win the Gold Award.
Q.11Your work will be translated into several languages and published on MANGA Plus and Jump+, reaching readers around the world. What expectations or concerns do you have?
I have neither expectations nor concerns.

I’m really excited that my work will be published in several languages. But I can’t control what readers think, so I don’t see the point in worrying too much.
Chapter 04

The Dream

“To have my own series and see it in print.”

— ohmiau

Q.12Do you have a big dream you’d like to fulfill through your future work?
I’d like to have my own series and see it in print.

I love holding a manga, flipping through its pages, and feeling the paper. It’s a completely different experience from reading it digitally. I think many creators dream of seeing their work in print; somehow, it makes their work feel more legitimate.
Q.13What kinds of stories would you like to create in the future?
I enjoy creating character-focused stories. Still, at some point, I’d also like to try creating my own fantasy world. I’m also interested in mixing the absurd with drama.
— MESSAGE TO FUTURE CREATORS —

Que se diviertan en el proceso.

— Enjoy the process.

The most important thing in life is to have fun. If you’re not enjoying what you’re doing, then why do it? That doesn’t mean every part of the process has to be easy and fun. There will be tedious and difficult moments, but those are part of the fun, too.
